We designed this ADU as the primary residence for our dear friends: a couple who value both entertaining and privacy equally. Set in the back of a deep residential lot the building closes itself to the North and South, providing privacy from tenants in the front house and neighbors behind. The entry, tucked under the second floor stair, leads to a double-height living room with a corner skylight and North facing floor to ceiling windows. Following the light leads you to a bright and centrally located kitchen situated between two outdoor patios: on the west a small, intimate patio perfect for a cup of coffee before guests arrive or a glass of wine after the party winds down. On the east is the larger “dinner patio” with an outdoor kitchen for easy entertaining. Continuing up the stairs leads to a full floor suite, which includes a study overlooking the living room, a “treehouse” bedroom with windows on two sides, and a bathroom with a skylit shower and soaking tub. The design was informed by the specific context of the site but also the larger context of LA modern architecture. During the design process, we took our clients on field trips to and drew inspiration from canonical projects by Irving Gill, Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, and Gregory Ain. This project is our entry into the Case Study House Program, just 80 years late.
